THE RIDE:

New Hope Community Bikes is partnering with the Ontario Provincial Police, Ontario Cycling, and the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, along with the communities of James Bay, to bring about this epic fundraising event.

Riders will traverse 300kms over 3 days on fat bikes to raise funds to equip youth in communities along the James Bay coast in Northeast Ontario with safe cycling education and resources. Our aim is to partner with 5 communities that this fundraising ride rolls through, to initiate youth bike programs. The 5 communities in particular include Moose Factory, Moosonee, Fort Albany, Kashechewan and Attawapiskat.

Youth in Pikangikum make use of their shipping container-turned bike shop and organize for a group ride.

WHAT ARE WE FUNDRAISING FOR?

Bicycles are a great medium for children and youth to experience physical health while developing confidence and learning transferable skills. Remote, Indigenous Communities face geographical barriers that make accessing bicycles and cycling education difficult. That’s why we want to bring resources, such as bikes, helmets, and educational curriculum like Ride Smart, into communities across Ontario - so that all children and youth have equitable access to cycling resources.

During this fundraising ride we will deliver fat bikes to 5 communities and include some cycling program elements such as group rides and tutorials on basic repairs. We hope this can be the beginning of a vibrant cycling movement in these communities and are committed to supporting them in developing their own cycling activities and resources, whether that is building trails or establishing a community bicycle shop.
