Refurby Derby: A Community Bike Build Challenge

  • New Hope Communtiy Bikes 1249 Main St E Hamilton Canada (map)

Refurby Derby is a hands-on, community event where individuals and teams refurbish bicycles. The event promotes skill-building, sustainability, and fun competition, while supporting affordable access to cycling and bike education.

Participants (solo or in pairs) have three hours to asses, repair and restore a donated bike. Afterward, judges score each build in the following categories:

  • Diagnostics Accuracy

  • Parts Selection

  • Repair Quality & Safety

  • Efficiency

  • Style Points

  • Demerits for incorrect or unnecessary parts

The evening includes space for spectators, light refreshments, and time to connect with others in the cycling community.

Entry is $25, and all refurbished bikes go back into community use.

If you’re ready for a winter evening of grease, grit, and good company, the Derby is waiting. 🚲✨
